Timing

Timing is essential in music. Without timing everything falls apart and you have noise. You can have all the right parts, the best instruments and musicians available, but without timing, the music falls apart.

The world of visual design can sometimes be seen as rather dimensional–it has width, height, and sometimes, depth. But, design also has another non-visual dimension that is akin to musical timing. This is part of visual hierarchy and flow–essentially when one component of a design leads you to another. This part of visual design also has a sense of timing. It can be quick, slow, staccato, slurred, etc….

By understanding how timing can add to the message you’re trying to say, you can add even more intense meaning to your visual solutions.

In music, we only essentially have 8 notes, but what a musician can do with those 8 notes can mean the difference between art and noise. Designers should think like musicians and compose visual symphonies.
